The 20.0% to 20.9% band... across the twenty-percent frontier. The rarest air yet, home to ice-concentrated eisbocks, the mightiest barrel-aged stouts and the occasional strong mead. Beers standing among the elder powers of the brewing world.
The Titans were the elder deities of Greek mythology: massive, primal beings who ruled the cosmos before the younger and more familiar Olympians. In reaching them, the Atlas has climbed completely beyond the realm of ordinary beer and entered something older and more elemental. Twenty per cent is a true frontier, an alcoholic potency that very few beer drinkers will ever encounter and the point at which beer enters the company of the most powerful fermented drinks in existence.
Beyond the twenty-per-cent threshold lies territory occupied by giants and rarities, and little reaches it by ordinary means. One path is the eisbock: an already powerful beer subjected to freezing and the removal of ice, concentrating its alcohol, body and flavour. Another is the extreme barrel-aged imperial stout, fermented to formidable strength before spending months or years maturing in spirit barrels. Hop Horizons also includes strong meads, whose fermentable sugars come principally from honey and which can reach similar heights through fermentation. Whatever the journey, this is well into sipping territory. These drinks belong in tiny portions and often behave more like fortified wine or liqueur than conventional beer.
Few breweries are more strongly associated with this frontier than Bavaria’s Schorschbräu, whose SchorschBock eisbocks climbed steadily through the ranks during the “beer strength wars”, reaching figures once almost unimaginable. It is therefore fitting that SchorschBock Ice20 appears in the Hop Horizons collection. Freeze concentration is one of the most direct ways of carrying beer beyond its normal limits, and Schorschbräu became one of its most celebrated modern practitioners. Its approach provides a fascinating contrast with the vast barrel-aged creations of American craft brewing.
Very few drinks beyond the twenty-per-cent threshold have been logged by Hop Horizons, but the wider brewing world contains considerably more. Familiar names return in still more powerful forms: particular vintages of The Bruery’s Black Tuesday have crossed the line, while double-barrelled editions and relatives such as Gray Monday have climbed higher still. River North reaches the same territory with creations such as its barrel-aged Belgian-style quadruple God Complex. The band is heavily populated by American barrel-aged imperial stouts, but freeze-concentrated beers, barley wines, Belgian-style strong ales and powerful meads prevent it from becoming entirely uniform.

The Bruery
The 2016 vintage carried The Bruery’s defining extreme stout across the twenty-per-cent line. More than a year in bourbon barrels produced an immense combination of chocolate, caramel, dark fruit, vanilla, oak and warming spirit character.

An intensified expression of Black Tuesday subjected to a second period of barrel ageing. Its already prodigious flavours developed into dark chocolate fudge, vanilla, bourbon, caramel, brown sugar and something approaching liquid German chocolate cake.

A hazelnut-led relative of Black Tuesday, double barrel-aged and treated with vanilla beans. The 2025 edition reached the absolute ceiling of this band, gathering chocolate, roasted malt, hazelnut, caramel, vanilla and whiskey into a 20.9% dessert beer.
River North Brewery
A valuable exception to the imperial-stout majority. River North carries a Belgian-style quadruple into Titan territory through maturation in Colorado rye whiskey barrels, building powerful layers of raisin, stone fruit, caramel, spice and oak.
New Holland Brewing
A suitably named collaboration with Dungeons & Dragons, aged first in new American oak and then finished in former bourbon barrels. Indonesian and Madagascan vanilla beans add another layer of richness to a stout designed to land exactly upon the twenty-per-cent threshold.
Anchorage Brewing Company
A blend of immensely strong imperial stouts matured in bourbon barrels before conditioning on coconut and Madagascar vanilla beans. The 2025 release spent more than twenty-one months in wood and emerged as a dense combination of bourbon, chocolate cake, toasted coconut, vanilla and burnt caramel.
Free Will Brewing Company
A still, spirit-like American strong ale created by blending beers matured in an assortment of barrels. Almost entirely without carbonation and presented in a corked bottle, it deliberately blurs the line between beer, fortified wine and dark spirit.
Soul Barrel Brewing
Reported as South Africa’s strongest beer at the time of its release, Icenator began as a doppelbock before years of ageing, blending and freeze concentration carried it to 20.4%. Its unusual journey produced something that the brewery described as a wild eisbock, although it resists simple classification.
