The World Breakers break the world apart... the forces whose emergence splits the heavens and brings an age to its conclusion, the final power before the end. Not the end itself, which comes one band higher, but the breaking that occurs immediately before it. The World Breakers belong within the 29.0–29.9% band because this is the level at which one of beer’s old ceilings was decisively shattered. Somebody achieved a strength almost no brewer had reached before and, in doing so, broke open the world that followed.

One below the end

Twenty-nine percent. There is just one band above this, and it is an open-ended one – the summit. Here the air is nearly devoid of anything. Hop Horizons does not currently list a single beer in the range, while the wider world contains only a handful. Each is a calculated attempt to push against the limits of brewing, whether through prolonged fermentation and barrel ageing or the repeated removal of water by freeze concentration. Nothing gets here through luck. Everything at 29% ABV is here because somebody deliberately set out to approach the limit.

Dave

Here we encounter one of the great landmarks of the modern extreme-beer story. In 1994, Oregon’s Hair of the Dog Brewing Company repeatedly froze approximately 300 gallons of its strong ale Adam, removing the ice until roughly 100 gallons of intensely concentrated beer remained. The result was Dave, at approximately 29% ABV. It was not the invention of freeze-concentrated beer – the eisbock tradition is much older – but in the emerging American craft-beer world it was extraordinary. Bottles have been passed around like relics ever since. Dave stands as one of the modern ancestors of the strength race: the improbable Oregon experiment that demonstrated just how far a craft brewer could push an existing beer.

The ones who followed

Other World Breakers subsequently arrived by several different routes. Belgium’s De Struise Brouwers freeze-concentrated an immensely strong, IPA-derived beer to 29%, calling the result Little Boy And Fatman. Russian experimental brewery Ability Brewing Project has produced several small-run freeze-concentrated releases at the same strength, including Angry Toys and Run With the Wolves. Meanwhile, the 2012 tenth-anniversary edition of Samuel Adams’ Utopias reached a little over 29% through high-gravity fermentation, blending and prolonged barrel ageing rather than freeze concentration. It was Utopias’ highest point at the time, although the series has since crossed into the thirty-percent band. These are very different beverages, united by one almost impossible figure.

No beer in this band has yet been logged on Hop Horizons, but the wider world is not entirely empty. These historical and limited-production releases are reported within the range. At strengths this unusual, figures should be understood as the published ABV for the named release or edition rather than a guarantee applying to every batch.
