Hardknott Brewery's Rhetoric #3 is an experimental and ambitious beer in the Barley Wine style. It pushes the boundaries of flavour. With just 3000 bottles created, this limited edition brew has a strong 12.4% ABV and the interesting addition of Szechuan peppercorns and green tea. With a little, off-white foam that fades rapidly, the beer pours a hazy amber to deep reddish-brown colour.
Rhetoric III has a complex aroma. Complementing modest herbal notes from the green tea and a bit of spice from the Szechuan peppercorns, it presents a rich fragrance of sweet malts, caramel and dried fruits. These aromas grow more noticeable when the beer warms to its advised 15 degrees Celsius, producing a fascinating sensation.
On the palate, this barley wine has a strong and varied taste character. A mild bitterness from the green tea balances the initial sweetness of caramel and toffee - the Szechuan peppercorns offer a distinctive, warming spiciness that stays on the finish. Notes of bread, dried fruit and a little hops give the taste general complexity. The texture is gently carbonated and smooth, allowing the rich tastes to show. Although the high alcohol level is obvious, it does not overwhelm the beer's delicate notes. A demanding and provocative brew, this version in the Rhetoric series highlights Hardknott's dedication to stretching the boundaries of conventional beer varieties.
