This imperial stout starts life as a rich 10 % ABV base before it’s carefully aged in whisky barrels from the Isle of Arran distillery. Those casks, often ex‑sherry wood originally soaked in fresh Arran whisky, lend this edition a restrained whisky whisper rather than a smoky shout. The result is a stout that’s more refined than raucous, with enough oak, vanilla and boozy warmth to be intriguing, and without overwhelming the stout foundation.
Pouring a deep brown so dark it borders on black, Paradox offers aromas of milk chocolate, subtle toffee, faint sea air and gentle oak spice. As it warms, hints of caramel, marshmallow toast and vanilla bean start to come through. On the palate, roasted malt anchors the sweetness, while whisky‑toned wood notes add depth and a lingering sensation of campfire char, without heavy peat or smoke.
The mouthfeel stays surprisingly smooth and creamy, especially given the whisky vessel finish. Medium carbonation keeps the texture clean, allowing flavours like dark chocolate, toffee and raisin to shine alongside a soft, salty‑edge finish that cuts through the sweetness. It’s approachable for fans of rich imperial stouts who prefer elegance over brute force - a classy way to marry brewery boldness with whisky finesse.
