All Around Us is an 8.4% Gold Top double IPA from Track, built around three different forms of Citra alongside Pacifica, Nelson Sauvin and New Zealand Cascade. On paper that's an extravagant mix of tropical fruit, citrus and white grape, with the luxurious sweetness the Gold Top series is known for. In the glass, it delivers.
It pours a dense, glowing yellow under a soft white head. The nose hits hard from the start – mango, passion fruit and key lime, with orange marmalade, ripe berries and that unmistakable winey Nelson Sauvin note behind them.
Citra runs the opening: juicy tropical fruit, lime zest and sweet orange. Pacifica brings honeyed citrus and marmalade, Nelson Sauvin adds gooseberry, green grape and a lightly dry, wine-like sharpness, and the NZ Cascade rounds it off with softer red-fruit notes – a welcome change of pace from all the heavy tropical stuff.
The body is exceptionally smooth and full. Oats and wheat lay down a soft base, while the lactose adds the creamy sweetness that separates a Gold Top from an ordinary double IPA. The result is thick and indulgent, with an almost confectionery quality – somewhere close to powdered fruit sweets.
For all that sweetness, there's enough citrus bite and hop intensity to stop it turning fully cloying. Lime, grape skin and a restrained bitterness show up towards the finish, though softness and ripe fruit stay firmly in charge throughout.
The 8.4% is very well hidden. A gentle warmth creeps in as it develops, but between the hops and that creamy texture, this is dangerously easy drinking for the strength.
It's excessive even by modern double IPA standards, but the flavours stay unusually well defined – Citra doing the tropical heavy lifting, Pacifica the honeyed citrus, Nelson the vinous complexity and the Cascade a delicate berry accent on top.
Rich, saturated and unapologetically decadent, this is the Gold Top formula working at its best. Less a refreshing IPA than a luxurious hop dessert – but taken slowly, an immensely enjoyable one.
