Glow is an 8% double IPA from Track, and it's a single-hop affair – Citra, selected from Carpenter Ranches, and nothing else. No blending, no supporting cast: just one of modern brewing's most celebrated hops given free rein to show its full range of citrus, tropical fruit and gentle dankness.
It pours a thick, hazy golden yellow under a soft white head. The aroma comes at you in waves – ripe passion fruit, mandarin and pink grapefruit, with mango, peach and fresh crushed hop cones behind them.
Sweet orange and juicy tropical fruit open the taste. Mandarin and pomelo form a vivid citrus core, while passion fruit, mango and a hint of pineapple give it an almost nectar-like lushness. As it goes on, sharper grapefruit peel and a delicate resinous edge start to show through the fruit.
The body is full, smooth and creamy – oats and wheat doing the pillowy work you'd expect from one of Track's bigger hazies. There's plenty of sweetness, but a measured bitterness and a lightly drying citrus finish keep it from getting heavy.
The 8% is buried deep. Only a gentle warmth at the end gives it away, which makes this dangerously easy drinking for a double IPA. Lingering mandarin, grapefruit and passion fruit keep pulling you back for another sip.
Glow is a reminder of exactly why Citra has stayed at the top for so long. Saturated with fruit, but with enough bitterness, resin and citrus sharpness to give it definition. Luxuriously soft, intensely aromatic and deceptively drinkable – Track doing what Track does best.
