Farm Yard Ales: The Devil Wears Strata

The Devil Wears Strata is a 5.2% New England-style IPA from Lancashire's Farm Yard Brew Co, built as a showcase for Strata – the American hop that seems to be everywhere at the moment. Oats, spelt and wheat provide the soft hazy base, leaving Strata to do its tropical-meets-dank thing on top.

It pours a cloudy golden yellow under a loose white head. The nose gets going straight away: pineapple, passion fruit and ripe mango, backed by grapefruit, fresh herbs and that unmistakable whiff of cannabis and crushed hop cones.

Juicy tropical fruit opens the taste – pineapple and mango first, then orange, grapefruit and even a hint of strawberry sweetness. Underneath all that sits the hop's earthier side: resin, greenery and a slightly savoury dankness that lifts it well above a standard fruit-forward pale.

The oats, spelt and wheat give it a smooth, rounded body, but it stays light enough to be properly refreshing. A little grain sweetness carries the hops before a dry, gently bitter finish of grapefruit peel, pine and lingering tropical fruit.

At 5.2% it sits in a nice middle ground – all the aromatic saturation and softness you'd want from a NEIPA, without the heaviness, sweetness or booze of the bigger examples.

A vibrant, very drinkable showcase for Strata. The tropical fruit grabs you first, but it's the dank, resinous undercurrent that stops it being predictable. Soft, hazy and full of flavour, with just enough attitude under the polished surface.
