Centaur Army White is a hefty 12% imperial pastry stout from Nottingham's Neon Raptor – a white chocolate take on their long-running Centaur Army, loaded up with salted caramel and peanut butter as well. Nobody involved was aiming for restraint.
It pours opaque black with a dense, dark beige head. The aroma is pure dessert: melted white chocolate, caramel sauce and roasted nuts, with darker cocoa and toasted malt underneath and just a whiff of booze.
White chocolate leads – vanilla, cocoa butter and a condensed-milk sweetness – followed by thick caramel with a little salt to sharpen it up. The peanut butter is smooth and surprisingly convincing, adding a roasted nuttiness without ever going harsh or too savoury.
Despite the name, this is still very much a dark imperial stout. There's roasted malt, chocolate and a trace of coffee bitterness pushing back against all the confectionery, though sweetness is doing most of the talking. The body is enormous – dense, creamy, almost syrupy – with low carbonation and a coating of chocolate, caramel and nuts that hangs around long after each sip.
The 12% is very well hidden, showing up mainly as warmth towards the end, but the sheer richness makes this a slow sipper rather than anything you'd casually knock back.
It's ridiculous, and that's exactly what a pastry stout like this should be. Huge, sweet and over the top, but the white chocolate, salted caramel and peanut butter genuinely work together. If you want subtlety, look elsewhere. If you're happy to give in to a glass of boozy confectionery, there's a lot to like here.
