Shattered Mirror is a 9.1% imperial stout brewed for Siren's thirteenth anniversary, drawing on two of their best-loved dark beers, Shattered Dream and Black Mirror. The recipe throws in cacao, roasted coffee, toasted coconut and vanilla, plus the character of deconstructed rum barrels. An anniversary beer with a lot to live up to, then.
It pours opaque black under a compact tan head. The nose is rich straight away β dark chocolate, fresh coffee and sweet coconut, with softer vanilla, molasses and a hint of rum warmth behind them.
Chocolate leads the taste, shifting between smooth milk chocolate and darker, more bitter cacao. Coffee follows close behind, adding roasted depth and enough bitterness to keep the sweetness in check. The toasted coconut gives it a rich, slightly nutty edge, and the vanilla smooths off the sharper corners β there's a definite dessert quality to it.
The rum barrel side comes forward as it warms: dark sugar, a touch of spice and a gentle boozy glow, but never enough to swamp the stout underneath. It's full-bodied and luxurious without turning sticky, thanks largely to the coffee and roasted malt bitterness holding things together.
Indulgent but well judged. Everything on the ingredient list shows up, yet nothing takes over β the chocolate, coffee, coconut, vanilla and rum all pull in the same direction rather than competing for attention. Dark, warming and layered, and a fitting birthday beer from a brewery that's always known its way around a big stout.
