Greens is a 10% triple IPA from Lewes brewery Beak, made with New York's Other Half – a brewery that knows a thing or two about hops. The hop bill is a greatest hits list: Citra, Nelson Sauvin, Galaxy and Motueka. So expectations were high.
It pours thick and properly hazy, a deep golden yellow. The aroma is all ripe mango, peach, passion fruit and sweet citrus, with that unmistakable white grape note from the Nelson. Motueka brings a flash of lime that stops the whole thing tipping into tropical overload.
The body is dense and smooth, almost creamy. Mango pulp, pineapple, peach and orange up front, then a slightly winey sharpness and a modest bitterness towards the end. There's a fair bit of residual sweetness – no surprise at this strength – but the hops are vivid enough to keep it from getting cloying. The alcohol is well hidden, though the sheer richness of the thing never lets you forget you're drinking something serious.
It's excessive, and that's the point. Intensely fruity, soft, and hoppy from first sip to last. Not one for quenching a thirst – more a slow, indulgent sipper, and a good argument for the triple IPA done properly.
