Shepherd Neame: Gentleman Jack

This ESB is/was brewed by Shepherd Neame in Faversham, Kent, England. It's achieved an overall score of 41.17%. Based on 7 tastings, the average ABV is 5.00%.

Gentleman Jack is a 5% traditional strong bitter from Shepherd Neame, combining crystal malt with Kentish hops and the brewery's characteristically mineral-rich water.

It pours a clear amber-brown under an off-white head. The nose offers caramel, toasted biscuit and light treacle, joined by dark fruit, herbs and a gentle peppery hop character.

Caramel malt leads the flavour, followed by raisins, orange marmalade and restrained spice. Earthy Kentish hops bring a firm bitterness, creating a dry finish that keeps the richer malt in check.

The body is moderately full but comfortably drinkable. At 5% there's more depth than an ordinary bitter, without ever straying into the heavier territory of barley wine or old ale.

Gentleman Jack is straightforward but satisfying: a robust, malt-led English ale with fruit, caramel and traditional hop bitterness. It may lack the complexity of the brewery's 1698 Celebration Ale, but it's a characterful example of the classic Kentish style all the same.
