The pub scene in central London has a reason to celebrate. The White Horse & Bower, a historic landmark just minutes from Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament, reopened on 10 September 2025 following an extensive £950,000 renovation by independent brewer and pub operator Shepherd Neame.
The renovation project included structural and aesthetic upgrades, restoring period features, improving accessibility, refitting the bar and service areas and improving the outdoor seating space. The aim was to blend together the pub’s heritage with comfort and modern amenities.
Shepherd Neame emphasized that the refurbishment was not just about appearance but also about utility - better lighting, improved heating, enhanced customer flow and ensuring the pub remains a hub for locals and visitors. Given its prime location, the White Horse & Bower hopes to draw in both tourists exploring Westminster and regulars from the surrounding community.
Management says the pub will continue to serve Shepherd Neame’s range of ales and beers, alongside guest brews, with food service operating during typical pub hours. The reopening is being viewed as part of a broader trend of city-centre pub restorations as operators seek to maintain relevance in a competitive hospitality market. Rising costs and changing consumer expectations are pushing pubs to invest more heavily in refurbishment and experience.
