Brewery Information
Shepherd Neame
This brewery is in Faversham, England. A total of 76 different beers from this brewery have been listed, with an average strength of 4.79% ABV. These beers have been recorded in 19 different places, and based on them, the brewery holds an overall score of 43.5%.
Shepherd Neame is one of the most historic names in British brewing. Based in the Kentish market town of Faversham, it pairs more than three centuries of brewing heritage with a substantial estate of pubs, inns and hotels across the south-east.
The company officially dates its foundation to 1698, though the evidence suggests beer was being made on the present site considerably earlier. Its continued presence in central Faversham gives Shepherd Neame an unusually strong connection with place, reinforced by Kent's long association with hop growing.
Traditional English ale remains central to the identity. The best-known beer is Spitfire Amber Ale, originally created as a one-off in 1990. It combines biscuit and caramel malt with orange fruit, earthy hops and a gently bitter finish – a recognisably Kentish take on classic British bitter.
Bishops Finger is stronger and fuller, with bread, toffee, dark fruit and firm English hop bitterness. Named after the distinctive finger-shaped road signs found in Kent, it's one of the brewery's most characterful permanent beers.
Other important releases include the bottle-conditioned 1698, the lighter Master Brew, and the Whitstable Bay range of pales, lagers and dark beer. Together they show a brewery trying to preserve traditional cask and bottled ale while also answering the demand for lighter, more contemporary styles.
The beers favour balance over spectacle. Malt, restrained fruit and herbal or earthy hops matter more here than tropical dry hopping, smoothie fruit or pastry sweetness. Served fresh and in good condition, the cask ales can be highly satisfying examples of traditional English brewing.
The enormous pub estate is just as important to the business. Venues run from traditional community locals to coastal inns, London pubs and food-led hotels, giving Shepherd Neame a visible presence across Kent and the wider south-east – and a dependable route to market for its cask beer.
Scale inevitably brings some uniformity. A Shepherd Neame pub may offer a lovely historic building but a fairly predictable beer range, especially where several handpumps are given over to closely related house brands. Quality can also depend heavily on cellaring and turnover.
The core range may look conservative next to modern craft breweries, and anyone hunting heavily hopped hazy IPAs or radical experimentation will find few surprises. But Shepherd Neame's strengths lie elsewhere: continuity, regional identity and the ability to produce balanced ale at serious scale.
The historic Faversham brewery remains a genuine attraction, with guided tours exploring the working site and the company's extensive heritage. That sense of living history sets Shepherd Neame apart from brands whose traditional imagery survives long after their original breweries have closed.
This is not Britain's most adventurous brewery, but it remains one of its most culturally significant. Its finest beers offer biscuit malt, restrained fruit and traditional Kentish hop character in a form built for the pub and the pint.
At its best, Shepherd Neame proves that familiar beer needn't be uninteresting. A fresh pint of Spitfire or Bishops Finger in a well-kept Kent pub remains an authentic and rewarding expression of traditional English ale.
