Almanac Beer Company didn’t just sprout up - it cultivated its roots directly in the soil of San Francisco, launching around 2010–2011 when homebrewers Damian Fagan and Jesse Friedman teamed up to ask a simple yet radical question, which was why should the ingredients in beer be any less local than those on our plates? Driven by the motto “Beer is agriculture”, they began brewing with fruits and grains from Northern California farms, and even hand-labelled their early batches, delivering them door-to-door in the Bay Area.

By late 2016, Almanac opened its first retail taproom in the Mission District, giving fans a place to sip their farm-to-barrel creations alongside small bites. Just a couple of years later, in 2018, they spread their wings to a 30,000-square-foot former Naval hangar in Alameda, complete with a brewery, barrel room and spacious taproom. This is the heart (and the mash) of the operation now.

These days, Almanac’s taps pour a blend of the familiar and the adventurous, including oak-aged sours, delicate farmhouse ales, barrel-aged stouts, hazy IPAs and even crisp lagers. Their forward-thinking approach has also fostered a collaboration with Admiral Maltings, another Alameda-based maker aiming to brew with truly local malts.
