Basqueland Brewing Project

Basqueland Brewing is one of Spain's most highly regarded modern breweries, combining American craft influences with the culinary confidence and strong regional identity of the Basque Country.

Founded in 2015, the brewery operates from Hernani, a short hop from San Sebastián. The original aim was simple but ambitious: locally brewed beer capable of standing alongside one of Europe's greatest food cultures.

Hop-forward beer accounts for much of the reputation. The pales and IPAs are typically polished, aromatic and generously flavoured – citrus, tropical fruit and stone fruit over soft but controlled malt. The stronger doubles can be intensely saturated while generally keeping enough bitterness to hold their shape.

The brewery also works confidently across lager, stout, sour beer and barrel-aged releases. The imperial stouts tend towards rich and dessert-like, while limited editions and collaborations show an appetite for experimentation beyond the permanent range.

Basqueland's greatest strength is technical consistency. Even the more extravagant beers usually feel carefully built, with clean fermentation and clearly defined flavours. Attractive contemporary artwork gives the cans an equally recognisable identity.

The main criticism is familiarity. Many releases cover ground already well trodden by Europe's leading craft breweries – particularly hazy IPA and heavily flavoured stout. Basqueland is often excellent within those styles, but not every new beer feels genuinely distinctive.

The Hernani brewery includes a taproom and terrace, while Basqueland Izakaia in San Sebastián pairs the beer with Asian-inspired food. Together they strengthen the connection between brewing and dining that has shaped the company from the start.

Basqueland is no longer fully independent, following the acquisition of a majority stake by Hijos de Rivera in 2025. Even so, its beers remain among the clearest demonstrations of how far contemporary craft brewing has come in Spain.

Polished, ambitious and consistently enjoyable, Basqueland sits comfortably among Europe's leading modern breweries.
