Brew York

Brew York is an independent brewery whose colourful beer, playful names and energetic venues have made it one of the most recognisable names in Yorkshire craft brewing.

Founded in 2016 by friends Wayne Smith and Lee Grabham, the brewery began at Walmgate, within York's historic city walls. Production later moved to a bigger facility in Osbaldwick, while the original site grew into Brew York's flagship Beer Hall and Tap Room.

The range is unusually broad, spanning cask, keg and cans. Modern pales and IPAs remain central, but Brew York moves confidently through lager, sour beer, traditional ale and extravagant imperial stout. The permanent line-up currently includes Coney hazy session IPA, Juice Forsyth fruited IPA, Golden Eagle pilsner and Lupu Lion gluten-free pale ale.

Accessible, fruit-forward beer is the house speciality. The pales lean towards citrus and tropical fruit rather than aggressive bitterness, while the fruited and sour releases go for bold, instantly recognisable flavours. The results are colourful, approachable and well suited to drinkers still finding their way into craft beer.

At the opposite extreme sits the collection of powerful dark beers. The Empress Tonkoko family pairs imperial stout with coconut, vanilla, cacao and tonka bean – Brew York's enthusiasm for rich, dessert-like excess in full flow.

The branding is every bit as exuberant. Beer names lean heavily on elaborate puns, pop culture and recurring characters, all wrapped in bright illustrated cans. It's entertaining and instantly recognisable – though occasionally the joke ends up more memorable than the beer behind it.

All that variety is both a strength and a limitation. Brew York is admirably willing to experiment, but the enormous procession of limited releases can make the catalogue feel restless, and the fruited beers and pastry stouts may prove too sweet for anyone who prefers restraint, dryness or traditional malt character.

Underneath the theatrical presentation, though, the brewing is generally assured. The core pales are approachable, the biggest stouts can be impressively indulgent, and the wider range shows real versatility.

The Walmgate venue is a big part of the experience, combining the original brewery with a large beer hall, taproom and street food. It gives visitors access to both the familiar beers and the less widely distributed releases – in one of Britain's most attractive beer cities.

Brew York may not be a brewery of understatement, but it was never meant to be. It's lively, imaginative and welcoming, making beer that puts enjoyment ahead of solemnity.

At its best, it combines serious brewing with a genuine sense of fun – a fine reflection of York's modern beer scene and one of Yorkshire's most engaging craft breweries.
