This brewing company burst onto the scene in 2015, rising from a humble shipping container nestled in STEK, Breda’s creative incubator. Roel Buckens, the brewery’s founder, taught himself the craft of brewing, dreamt big and launched it all with a bold, no-holds-barred credo: “Beer for Thought”, with an extra middle finger to blandness: “Fck the status quo!”.
Over the years, they’ve brewed in an old candy factory (De Faam) before scaling up into the spacious Bay distribution centre, peppering their roster with everything from hazy IPAs to barrel-aged delights and experimental specials.
Year after year, innovation fuels the Frontaal engine. Around 48 unique specials and 12 barrel-aged beasts emerge annually, each flaunting creative flairs that demand a second sip, and serious contemplation, instead of passively going down the hatch. Underpinning their wild flavour runs? A fierce commitment to balance, quality, and fearless originality. Plus, their cans and labels are little art pieces, often designed by Jenna Arts and other collaborators to add that extra spark of personality.
But Frontaal doesn’t just brew beer, they cultivate community. Their Brouwcafé in Breda (a cozy industrial-chic taproom with over 30 rotating taps) and a sister bar in Utrecht roll out curated pours alongside snacks and warm hospitality. They’ve even invited fans in as stakeholders via equity crowdfunding, making Frontaal one of the most-invested-in breweries in the Netherlands. Throw in their annual Brewda festivals, and what you’ve got is a brewery that’s as much about craft connection as it is about memorable flavour.
