In the heart of Saint Petersburg, Bakunin Brewery springs to life not in the mold of solemn tradition, but with the laughter and recklessness of creative ferment. Born in 2013 from a meeting at the now-iconic Bakunin beer café, it was founded by three collaborators, Alexander Romanenko (the café’s owner), home‑brewing devotee Yuri Mitin and professional brewer Vladimir Naumkin, united by a passion for bold flavours, daring experimentation and a serious urge to share good beer with good people.

Their debut brew, Laughing Sam American Pale Ale, popped the cork in September 2013 and quickly marked the beginning of a brewery that treats every beer as a conversation starter, among beer geeks and soon beer lovers across Europe. At the 2016 Tallinn Craft Beer Weekend (TCBW2016), their Cocoa Milk Imperial Stout – Eclipse soared into the top ten out of nearly 300 entries, proof that their adventurous spirit wasn’t just lip service.

Bakunin’s story unfurls in a broader tapestry of Russia’s craft beer revolution, where once the notion of quality local ales was met with skepticism or laughter, and now, it’s breweries like this one leading the charge out of the vodka-soaked past. And if that weren’t anarchic enough, the name “Bakunin” winks at Mikhail Bakunin himself, the Russian collectivist anarchist, perfect for a brewery that’s perfectly okay with upending traditional norms in favour of wild, unbridled creativity.
