Greene King

This brewery is in Bury St. Edmonds, England. A total of 70 different beers from this brewery have been listed, with an average strength of 4.69% ABV. These beers have been recorded in 24 different places, and based on them, the brewery holds an overall score of 47.8%.

Greene King is one of the biggest and most familiar names in British brewing. Based in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, it produces nationally distributed ales while running an enormous estate of pubs, restaurants and hotels across England, Scotland and Wales.

Benjamin Greene founded the business in 1799, though brewing had been happening on the Westgate site for nearly a century before he arrived. The brewery still draws its water from chalk wells beneath the brewhouse, with malt sourced from East Anglia.

Its best-known beer is arguably Greene King IPA – which, despite the name, is no IPA in the modern American sense. It's a modestly strengthened English bitter built on malt, restrained fruit and gentle hop bitterness. At 3.6%, it's designed for uncomplicated session drinking rather than aromatic fireworks.

Abbot Ale offers considerably more character. This 5% premium bitter pairs biscuity, lightly sweet malt with fruit, flowers, herbs and a bit of warming alcohol. Challenger, First Gold and Fuggles supply traditional English bitterness and aroma, while a slow fermentation adds restrained fruity esters.

Greene King has also long brewed Old Speckled Hen, originally created by Morland in 1979 to mark fifty years of MG production in Abingdon. Its caramel malt, pear-drop fruitiness and gentle herbal bitterness made it one of Britain's most recognisable bottled ales. In May 2026, though, Greene King agreed to sell the Old Speckled Hen family of brands to Damm, the owner of Estrella – brewing will stay at Westgate initially before moving to Damm's Bedford brewery.

The traditional beers are rarely dramatic. Their appeal lies in familiarity, accessibility and simply working as everyday pub pints. When well kept, Abbot in particular can be satisfying and characterful, while Greene King IPA stays light enough for a long session.

Consistency is one of the company's great strengths. Greene King has the technical resources and distribution network to keep cask flowing across a huge pub estate – and at its best, that keeps traditional British beer visible in places where an independent brewery would struggle to land a permanent handpump.

Scale is also where most of the criticism comes from. The company's dominance can make its pubs feel standardised, and tied purchasing arrangements inevitably limit what landlords can stock. A bar with several handpumps can still offer precious little real variety when most of them belong to Greene King or brands it has swallowed up.

The beers themselves can look conservative next to the output of smaller modern breweries. Greene King IPA is mild, lightly hopped and easily overshadowed by contemporary pales, and some drinkers find the house yeast's fruity signature a bit too recognisable across the different brands.

But judging Greene King purely against small craft breweries misses part of the point. Its real achievement isn't experimental double IPAs or barrel-aged rarities – it's keeping cask ale in front of a broad national audience. The seasonal and collaborative cask releases add at least some variation beyond the permanent range too.

Big change is coming at Bury St Edmunds as well: a new Westgate brewery is planned for 2027, designed to cut the water needed in production by as much as half.

Greene King is never going to excite drinkers chasing the cutting edge of independent brewing – it's too large, too familiar and often too cautious for that. But it remains an important custodian of traditional English ale, with more than two centuries of brewing history behind it.

The vast pub estate can breed uniformity, and the most common beers vary hugely depending on how well they're kept. But a fresh pint of Abbot in a good pub is still a rewarding expression of English brewing: malty, fruity, gently bitter and built for conversation rather than spectacle.
