Pentrich Brewing Company is an independent Derbyshire brewery best known for modern, generously hopped pale ales and IPAs. Working from an industrial estate between Ripley and the village of Pentrich, it has built a strong national reputation without losing the feel of a relatively small, focused producer.

The story starts in 2013, when Joe Noble and Ryan Shaw began brewing at home in their spare time. The hobby gradually turned into a commercial project, and in 2015 they moved into their first proper brewery on Asher Lane.

Hop-forward beer is where Pentrich excels. The pales, IPAs and doubles typically combine vivid citrus and tropical fruit with the resin, bitterness and dryness needed to keep them recognisably beer-like.

They're particularly good at pulling big flavour out of moderate-strength pales. These beers can deliver mango, grapefruit, peach and lime without leaning on excessive alcohol or residual sweetness – proper pint beers rather than something to sample in thirds.

At the stronger end, things get more extravagant. The double and triple IPAs can be thick, saturated and intensely aromatic, usually built on fashionable American and New Zealand hops. The best hide their strength remarkably well while keeping enough bitterness and structure to stop the fruit going shapeless.

It's not all haze, either. West Coast-inspired pales and IPAs regularly bring clarity, pine, grapefruit peel and a firmer bitter finish. That willingness to brew both soft and assertive interpretations gives the range more variety than first appears.

The brewery ventures confidently into dark and malt-led territory too. Imperial stouts, barley wines, wee heavies and other big releases show a real interest in caramel, chocolate, dark fruit and warming alcohol. Some are deliberately excessive, but the strongest usually have a solid beer underneath rather than depending entirely on adjuncts.

Releases often carry enigmatic names and striking illustrated cans. The branding is colourful and distinctive without overwhelming the beer itself – enough to keep Pentrich recognisable on an increasingly crowded bottle-shop shelf.

There's a sense of constant movement to the range. Many beers appear as limited releases rather than permanent fixtures, which encourages repeat exploration but makes favourites hard to find twice. It suits modern craft retail, though it can occasionally leave the impression of many closely related pales distinguished mainly by their latest hop combination.

That repetition is the most obvious criticism. Pentrich is so closely tied to modern IPA that successive releases can cover similar ground: pale, hazy, soft, packed with citrus or tropical fruit. Anyone after traditional mild, lager or understated malt-led beer will find fewer regular options.

Freshness matters enormously too. The most heavily dry-hopped beers are at their best soon after packaging, while the aromas are vivid and the texture clean. Older cans can lose definition or pick up hop harshness – a problem with the wider style rather than Pentrich specifically, but worth knowing.

The taproom is the best place to explore the range close to its source. The industrial surroundings make clear this is a working brewery rather than a polished city-centre bar, and the rotating selection lets you compare pales, stronger specials and occasional cask releases in one sitting.

Pentrich occupies an interesting spot in Derbyshire brewing. The county has deep traditional-ale roots and famous producers like Thornbridge, but Pentrich represents a younger, more explicitly modern take on the region's brewing culture.

It may not have the scale or name recognition of Britain's biggest craft breweries, but the beers regularly compete with them on quality – and the brewery has built an especially loyal following among drinkers who value expressive hops, big flavour and consistent technical execution.

Pentrich is at its best when combining intensity with drinkability: enormous aroma at sensible strength in the pales, extravagance without abandoning balance in the big stuff.

For fans of contemporary British IPA, this is one of Derbyshire's most compelling breweries – independent, dependable and quietly capable of producing some exceptional beer.
