City/Town Information
San Francisco, USA
This town or city is in San Francisco, California, USA. Across 10 separate days dates and 20 pubs or other venues, 163 beers beers from 73 different breweries have been logged (avg 6.53% ABV). This puts the location’s overall beer quality at 81.9%.
A total of 129 beers from 19 different breweries have been recorded, enjoyed in 29 pubs or venues. The average strength of beers brewed there is 6.4% ABV, earning the location a brewing score of 65.5%.
San Francisco holds a foundational place in American craft beer. The scene has never been defined by a simple brewery count or one fashionable style – it's a mix of brewing history, Californian hop culture, neighbourhood taprooms and easy access to the wider Bay Area, one of the richest beer regions in the United States.
The city's beer identity is inseparable from Anchor Brewing. The brewery's history stretched back into the nineteenth century, but it was the revival under Fritz Maytag from the 1960s that proved a small American producer could survive by making distinctive, flavourful beer rather than going head-to-head with the national lager brands. Anchor Steam became synonymous with the city, while Liberty Ale was an early signpost towards the hop-forward pales that would transform American brewing.
Anchor's closure in 2023 was more than the loss of a big local brewery – it severed the link between modern craft beer and an older, nearly vanished American brewing tradition. The business and its brands were later bought by Hamdi Ulukaya, who has kept revival plans alive, but as of mid-2026 there's still no confirmed reopening date or proper relaunch of Anchor Steam. Preparations do seem to be ongoing, making the brewery's possible return one of the most closely watched stories in American beer.
But San Francisco's brewing culture goes far beyond Anchor. More than twenty breweries operate within the city, from serious production businesses to small neighbourhood brewpubs, scattered across Bernal Heights, the Mission, SoMa, Dogpatch, Bayview and the Presidio. That spread makes exploring the scene feel like a treasure hunt rather than a stroll down one obvious drinking street.
Cellarmaker has long flown the flag for the city's modern hop-focused side. Its reputation was built on intensely aromatic pales and IPAs, brewed in small batches and constantly reworked with different hop combinations – helping popularise the idea that perpetual variation could itself be an identity, rather than leaning on a fixed flagship range.
The best Cellarmaker beers capture what northern Californian hop brewing does so well: citrus, tropical fruit and resin arriving with tremendous freshness, but with enough bitterness and dryness to still taste like beer rather than fruit juice. The darker output – especially the coffee stouts – shows the strengths extend beyond hops too.
Barebottle offers a broader, more communal take on the modern brewery. Its big Bernal Heights space pairs visible brewing kit with long tables and an extensive rotating tap list that hops between IPAs, lagers, stouts, sours and odder experiments – many of them born from local homebrewing competitions. There are further Bay Area venues too, including a beer garden in Salesforce Park.
Fort Point provides a useful contrast to the limited-release IPA crowd. Founded in the Presidio, it has a strong visual identity and a range where Kölsch-style beer, pilsner and other clean, restrained styles take centre stage. Its Ferry Building beer garden is particularly good at pairing local beer with an unmistakably San Franciscan setting.
Other breweries give individual neighbourhoods their own flavour. Standard Deviant pours an eclectic range from its Mission and Pier 70 sites, Black Hammer runs a lively SoMa taproom with a broad rotating selection, and Laughing Monk, Speakeasy, Harmonic, Olfactory and Woods each add their own mix of local identity, experimentation and approachability.
Magnolia deserves a historical mention of its own. Its Haight Street brewpub became known for British-influenced cask beer at a time when American craft was charging towards kegged IPA, and its later Dogpatch operation carried that interest in both American and European traditions into a bigger industrial setting.
So the city isn't as stylistically narrow as Californian beer's reputation might suggest. West Coast IPA remains essential – grapefruit, pine, resin and a dry, emphatic bitterness – and hazy IPA is now just as familiar, but they sit alongside lager, Kölsch, saison, barrel-aged stout, sours and surviving pockets of cask ale.
San Francisco's greatest beer advantage may actually lie outside its city limits. It's the gateway to the entire Bay Area, where Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Richmond and the surrounding towns hold breweries every bit as important as those in the city itself.
Berkeley's Fieldwork has built a substantial regional network on rapidly changing beers and multiple taprooms, and in 2026 it moved directly into San Francisco with a beer garden at China Basin and plans for an indoor Mission Rock taproom – a good illustration of how blurred the line between city and wider Bay Area has become.
Alameda adds the likes of Faction and Almanac, while Oakland brings an energetic, diverse collection of producers and bars. Head further north and you reach Russian River, whose Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger are landmarks of American IPA culture. Use San Francisco as a base and you can reach far more outstanding beer than the city's own brewery count suggests.
Specialist bars have always been crucial to stitching these areas together. Toronado remains the most famous: an uncompromising Lower Haight beer bar with an exceptional draught list, minimal ceremony and an atmosphere that lands somewhere between gloriously authentic and mildly hostile, depending on the visitor and the time of day.
Others offer more polished versions of the same devotion. Zeitgeist pairs a big outdoor drinking space with classic San Francisco directness, Monk's Kettle wraps a carefully chosen list inside a food-led neighbourhood restaurant, and bars like Crafty Fox bring in breweries from across California without requiring a pilgrimage to each taproom.
City Beer Store once played an especially important role, combining a bar with a vast retail selection. Founded in 2006, it helped popularise the drink-in, take-home bottle shop format – and its closure in 2024 removed one of the city's formative craft institutions while underlining the tough economics facing specialist beer businesses.
Those pressures are visible all over San Francisco. High rents, labour costs, falling alcohol consumption and shifting habits make it a demanding place to run a brewery or bar, and even nationally known names have closed, moved or scaled back.
The wider American craft market has matured too. A locally brewed IPA is no longer a novelty in itself, and drinkers can get brewery-direct cans, subscriptions and specialist deliveries far more easily than a decade ago. Venues now have to offer a compelling physical experience rather than simply owning rare beer.
The result is a growing emphasis on taprooms, food, outdoor space and neighbourhood loyalty. Breweries increasingly work as social venues first and production facilities second, and the most successful feel woven into their surroundings – serving regulars rather than existing purely as collector destinations.
The geography makes exploration rewarding and mildly inconvenient in equal measure. The city looks compact on a map but is carved up by hills, neighbourhoods and transport routes, so a brewery crawl takes more planning than walking one long street – especially if you're combining SoMa, the Mission, Bernal Heights and Dogpatch.
Public transport reaches most of the major venues, but check opening hours carefully – some taprooms run restricted weekly schedules, and two apparently nearby spots can feel much further apart once the gradients get involved.
Prices are another unavoidable factor. Craft beer here is expensive even by American urban standards, strong releases and packaged rarities especially so, and tax plus tipping makes the final bill noticeably bigger than the number on the board. Anyone used to British thirds may also find standard American pours hard going across several strong beers.
Measures have become more flexible than the traditional American pint, though. Flights and smaller pours are common in taprooms, which makes working through a list that runs from light lager to double IPA and imperial stout a far more responsible undertaking.
The overall standard is high, but the scene isn't immune to repetition. A board dominated by several similar hazy IPAs can feel oddly conservative beneath the surface novelty, with the same Citra, Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin and hop-concentrate combinations cropping up again and again.
The city is at its most interesting when its breweries resist that uniformity. A crisp Fort Point lager, a bitter West Coast IPA, a Magnolia cask ale and a strange Woods fermentation tell you more about San Francisco than four consecutive opaque pales ever could. The strength of the scene is contrast, not saturation.
Food makes the whole thing better too. The city's culinary diversity means a beer trip can easily take in tacos, pizza, seafood, burgers and cuisines from across Asia and Latin America. Some breweries run their own kitchens, others host pop-ups or welcome outside food, so drinking becomes part of a wider neighbourhood visit.
The climate is surprisingly well suited to it all. San Francisco is rarely as warm as visitors expect, and the cool evenings flatter everything from bright pale ale to imperial stout. The beer gardens are excellent when sheltered – though the fog and wind mean a spare layer is usually more use than sunglasses.
As a beer city, San Francisco is neither the biggest nor the densest in the country. Portland packs in more breweries, San Diego owns the IPA association more emphatically, and cities like Denver or Asheville have more breweries per head.
What San Francisco offers instead is historical weight, regional depth and extraordinary variety within reach of itself. Its own breweries are just the centre of a much larger network stretching across the Bay Area and up into northern California.
The loss of Anchor and City Beer Store showed how fragile even beloved institutions can be. But new venues keep opening, regional breweries keep moving in, and the established names are still capable of excellent work. The recent expansion of the likes of Fieldwork and Two Pitchers suggests distinctive concepts and welcoming taprooms can still grow, even in a difficult national market.
The best way to understand San Francisco's craft scene is not as a preserved relic of an earlier boom, but as a culture in the middle of another transition – from pioneering brewpubs to hop-driven experimentation, through a period of explosive abundance, and into a more selective, economically demanding maturity.
For the travelling beer enthusiast, it remains outstanding. Historic names, modern breweries, uncompromising specialist bars and easy routes into one of America's great regional beer landscapes. It may no longer have the innocent excitement of craft beer's earliest days – but it offers something richer: history, character, diversity and the constant possibility that the next exceptional glass is just over another hill.
