Brewery tours run too, making it an obvious way to start or finish a visit.
In the historic centre, Ludlow's strength lies in characterful pubs rather than specialist craft bars. The Church Inn occupies a centuries-old building near St Laurence's Church, while the Blue Boar pairs four changing real ales with the warmth of a proper multi-room pub. The Rose and Crown, tucked away in an old courtyard, claims to be the town's oldest pub and adds another particularly atmospheric spot for local beer.
The compact size is a real advantage. Most of the central pubs sit within a short and very pretty walk of each other, past timber-framed buildings, narrow lanes and the market square. The annual food festival even runs a pub trail linking venues inside and beyond the old town walls.
Anyone expecting fridges full of international pastry stouts or a parade of hazy double IPAs will find the scene fairly conservative. The emphasis here is on cask, regional breweries and comfortable pubs rather than relentless novelty.
But that restraint suits Ludlow. This is a place for an unhurried pint of local bitter after the castle, followed by another beside a fireplace or in an ancient courtyard. It may not be one of Britain's biggest beer destinations, but the combination of local brewing, historic pubs and outstanding surroundings makes it one of the most charming.
