Utrecht may sit in Amsterdam's shadow, but as a craft-beer destination it's more compact, more relaxed and arguably easier to enjoy. The historic centre has canals, cellar bars and traditional cafés, while several excellent modern breweries operate out in the less touristy districts.

De Kromme Haring is perhaps the city's most interesting brewery. Its welcoming brewpub serves modern IPAs alongside classic and mixed-fermentation styles, with real attention paid to yeast and fermentation rather than hops alone. The result is an unusually varied range – and a venue that feels genuinely rooted in its local community.

Oproer offers a louder, more alternative take on Utrecht beer culture. Its big Overvecht beer café pairs the brewery's own releases with an entirely plant-based food menu, regular events and a deliberately inclusive atmosphere. The range runs from accessible pilsner and IPA to limited barrel-aged wild ales and sours.

VandeStreek is the other big local name, known internationally for both its conventional and alcohol-free beer. The taproom pours right beside the brewing kit, while its Oudegracht food bar gives the brewery a more central showcase alongside a handful of rotating guest taps.

The city centre rewards a visit even without setting foot in a brewery. Kafé België is one of Utrecht's oldest specialist beer cafés, Belgian Beer Café Olivier occupies a spectacular former hidden church with an extensive Belgian list, and Stadskasteel Oudaen offers the memorable experience of drinking house beer in a medieval building right on the canal.

The main drawback is that the breweries are scattered beyond the historic centre, so seeing the full scene means cycling or public transport. Prices can be steep too, and – as everywhere – the boards sometimes hold more interchangeable hazy IPA than genuine surprise.

Even so, Utrecht is an excellent beer city. Independent breweries, characterful old cafés and one of Europe's most attractive urban settings, all without feeling overrun by tourism. The scene is smaller than Amsterdam's, but friendlier, calmer and far more manageable – the sort of city where an afternoon beside the canal very easily turns into an evening devoted to exceptional Dutch beer.
