Galaxy is arguably Australia’s most famous hop variety, with good reason. It was developed by Hop Products Australia, from their breeding programme in 1994 and commercially released in 2009. It has since become one of the defining Southern Hemisphere hops, not least in pale ales, IPAs, hazy pales and New England-style IPAs. It’s got Australian high-alpha hops and the German variety Perle in its lineage, giving it a very distinctive aromatic profile. Hop Products Australia describes it as their β€œmost well-known Australian hop with passion fruit, peach and citrus character. Galaxy can be gloriously expressive in glass, often associated with passionfruit, peach, citrus, tropical fruit and sometimes a slightly grassy or resinous edge. It can be added late in the boil, in the whirlpool or as a dry hop to give beer a vivid, juicy quality that feels bright, modern and immediately inviting. It’s really good at giving that β€œsunshine” tropical impression in hop-forward beers where the fruit character seems to jump out of the glass before the first sip.
