Batch Bottlestore

Batch Bottlestore is an independent bottle shop and bar tucked away in Kings Court, just off Railway Street in central Altrincham. Combining the range of a specialist beer retailer with the comfort of a neighbourhood pub, it's become one of the town's most rewarding spots for adventurous drinking.

It was opened in 2019 by Chris Bardsley and Will Brown, both formerly of the management team at Manchester's Pi, and was pitched as a halfway house between an off-licence and a taproom. That's still accurate, though it's grown into something warmer and more rounded than either label suggests.

The bar sits in a compact corner unit within the Kings Court courtyard, slightly hidden from Altrincham's busier streets – which gives it that pleasing sense of somewhere discovered rather than merely walked past. Inside, shelves and fridges packed with colourful cans and bottles leave no doubt about what the place is for.

The packaged selection is one of Batch's biggest strengths. British craft breweries are especially well represented, from the big national names down to small producers whose beers rarely make it into ordinary pubs. Pales and IPAs take up plenty of fridge space, as you'd expect, but the range stretches into lagers, traditional Belgian styles, imperial stouts, fruit sours and strong barrel-aged beers.

It's broad without being indiscriminate. Rather than filling shelves with everything available, the selection feels like it's been put together by people who genuinely enjoy drinking and talking about beer. Cans can be taken away or opened on the spot, so the shop and bar sides feed into each other nicely.

The rotating draught line-up gives you a more immediate reason to stay. Batch opened with six keg lines and a cask line, pouring the likes of Cloudwater, Track, Pomona Island and Kirkstall, and while the specific beers change, the emphasis stays firmly on fresh, independent brewing rather than permanent mainstream fixtures.

The tap list is sensibly sized – enough variety to reward experimenting, without the enormous electronic catalogue that takes longer to read than the beer takes to drink. Smaller measures make it easy to work through a few stronger or unfamiliar pours, and a growler can sometimes take the draught side home with you too.

What Batch does particularly well is function as a local rather than a shrine for the dedicated. The staff know their beer and give useful recommendations, but it never feels like a clubhouse that demands specialist knowledge at the door. Someone hunting the latest limited-release IPA can sit happily next to someone drinking wine or just catching up with friends.

Natural wine has become an increasingly big part of the offer, alongside cider, cocktails, spirits and the house enthusiasm for limoncello. That broader range stops the place being off-putting for groups where not everyone worships at the altar of hops.

The interior is stylish but relaxed, built more around conversation than spectacle. The small dimensions make it intimate, though they can also make a seat hard to come by when it's busy. The communal layout gets people talking – especially once customers start comparing whatever odd cans they've pulled out of the fridges.

Outside, the Kings Court courtyard adds an attractive extra drinking area. On a warm afternoon or evening the sheltered space gives Batch a completely different character – lively and sociable without the traffic noise of a table by a main road. It makes the place considerably more appealing in summer.

Food has variously included sandwiches, sharing boards and other compact dishes suited to the setting. This isn't a restaurant, but a well-chosen plate can turn an exploratory drink into a much longer visit, and the focus stays on food that complements the drinks rather than crowding out the limited space.

Prices vary, inevitably. A straightforward local pale stays reasonably accessible, while imports, big stouts and barrel-aged releases can get expensive, and drinking a can in may carry a premium over the takeaway price. Fair enough for a small independent – but if you're eyeing up several imposing cans, keep half an eye on how fast the bill can grow.

The sheer choice can be its own challenge. Beer names often tell you nothing, and the refrigerated walls can look overwhelming if you don't know the current crop of breweries and styles. That's where the friendly, knowledgeable service earns its keep – Batch generally turns that potential confusion into part of the fun of discovery.

Traditional pub drinkers may find it less immediately their thing. Cask isn't the main focus, seating is limited, and the appeal lies in an ever-changing independent range rather than the same familiar pint every week. Anyone after cheap mainstream lager or a big sports pub has plenty of alternatives nearby.

But judging Batch by those standards misses the point. It gives Altrincham something more specialised while keeping the feel of a friendly local, and the ability to browse, drink, discuss and take beer home creates a satisfying loop between shop and bar.

Batch is compact, welcoming and exceptionally well stocked. Its strength isn't just the number of beers on offer but the relaxed setting in which to explore them – good beer taken seriously, without any unnecessary solemnity aimed at the customer.

For anyone into independent brewing, this is one of Altrincham's essential stops: part bottle shop, part taproom and, increasingly, a thoroughly enjoyable pub in its own right.
