Dead Crafty Beer Co. (Allerton Road)
Located in in Liverpool, England, this venue has seen 22 different beers served over 5 days, serving beers with an average strength of 8.25% ABV. Based on these beers, it holds an overall score of 77.2%.
Dead Crafty has long been one of Liverpool's essential stops for serious craft beer, and this second branch brings the same enthusiasm and carefully picked range to Allerton Road – meaning south Liverpool finally gets a proper specialist beer bar without a trek into town.
The Allerton venue is brighter and more spacious than the original Dale Street bar, but it keeps the relaxed, independent feel that made Dead Crafty work in the first place. This is clearly a bar for people who care about beer, but without any of the intimidating attitude that can come with specialist venues. The welcome is friendly, the surroundings are informal, and beer geeks and curious newcomers should feel equally at home.
Beer is, of course, the main event. The keg line-up moves confidently between modern British breweries and sought-after producers from Europe and the States – expect pale ales, hazy IPAs, imperial stouts, lagers and fruited sours in rotation. The taps change often enough to keep repeat visits interesting, and the fridges add an even wider spread of cans and bottles.
The international selection is a real strength. American beer in genuinely good condition is hard to come by in Britain, and much of Dead Crafty's reputation rests on sourcing releases that rarely make it to ordinary pubs or bottle shops. These sit alongside strong picks from the best British breweries, so the range feels curated rather than just enormous.
All that variety can make for a bewildering wall of unfamiliar names, styles and strengths – which is where the staff come in. Service is one of the strongest features here: enthusiastic without being patronising, with recommendations built around what you actually drink rather than steering everyone towards the trendiest or priciest option.
The smaller measures matter too. With plenty of high-strength beers and a constantly shifting board, thirds let you work through several taps without turning a casual afternoon into an endurance event. Prices reflect what independent and imported craft costs these days, especially for the stronger or rarer stuff, but there's enough choice to keep things reasonable.
The atmosphere is refreshingly unpretentious. Dead Crafty takes beer seriously without insisting that every customer does. Conversation beats ceremony, dogs are welcome, and it works equally well for a quick pint or several hours slowly picking your way down the board.
The location fills a genuine gap as well. Allerton Road has no shortage of bars and restaurants, but very few offer craft beer with this breadth or this level of knowledge behind it. Dead Crafty adds something to the area rather than duplicating what's already there.
If you're after traditional cask, mainstream lager or bargain prices, the emphasis here lies elsewhere. And the relentless turnover means finding something exceptional can be followed by the disappointment of it being gone next visit. But that impermanence is part of the fun – the selection rewards curiosity, and no two sessions need be the same.
The Allerton branch expands one of Liverpool's best craft-beer institutions without feeling like a watered-down copy of the original. Adventurous international range, knowledgeable service, a welcoming atmosphere and a location that puts specialist beer within easy reach of the south of the city.
For anyone on Allerton Road who'd rather explore an unfamiliar brewery than settle for the usual pint, Dead Crafty is an outstanding addition.
