What is Traditional Pale Ale?
Traditional pale ale is a classic British ale known for its balance of biscuity malt, earthy or floral hops, fruity fermentation and a dry, gently bitter finish.
Despite the name, it isn't always especially pale. Traditional examples range from gold and amber to deep copper - a reminder that "pale" was originally a comparison with the much darker porters, stouts and milds that once dominated British brewing.
On the bar, these beers are often called bitter rather than pale ale. Ordinary bitter, best bitter and strong bitter all belong to the same broad family, with the differences mainly down to strength and intensity.

How It's Brewed
Traditional pale ale is usually brewed with British pale ale malt, bringing flavours of bread, biscuit and light toast.

British hops like Fuggles, East Kent Goldings, Challenger, Target or Bramling Cross provide earthy, floral, herbal, woody or lightly spicy flavours. Some modern examples use American or New World hops, but a traditional pale ale should stay more restrained than an American pale or modern IPA.

How Traditional Pale Ale Differs from Similar Styles
